Why Sleep Affects Your Skin

There is a lot of truth behind the term “beauty sleep.” Sleep is where some of the most important internal and epidermal recovery takes place. Our body is constantly working on removing toxins, eliminating depleted skin cells, and creating new cells to take their place.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SLEEP

While you are asleep, your skin’s blood flow increases and so does the melatonin and human growth hormone production. This accelerates skin regeneration and the production of antioxidant enzymes within the body, thus allowing the body to heal from the day's damage. During this time, the skin repairs up to three times faster than when we are awake!

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T GET GOOD SLEEP?

Getting a good night of sleep can affect your skin and body in very positive ways, but skimping on sleep can lead to impaired body functions which unfortunately will cause negative changes in your skin. Sleep allows our body to break down toxins, and a lack of good sleep may result in fluid waste gathering in areas of the face. The best way to avoid this is to make sure you are well hydrated before bed, and elevate your head slightly to prevent buildup. Even just one night of poor sleep may cause puffy eyes, dark circles, tired skin, more wrinkles and fine lines.

PRODUCTS TO USE BEFORE BEDTIME

Skincare products formulated for the night time normally contain active ingredients that can enhance your skin’s natural ability to rejuvenate and repair. Products that contain retinol and peptides are fabulous for speeding up the recovery process and slough off the dead skin and UV damage. Plus - use a silk pillowcase to prevent irritation-causing friction - this also works great to tame bed head! As your body uses sleep to recover, your night time skin care routine will help speed up the process.
