Esthetician-approved Guide to Sunscreen, Sun Damage, & Summer Skincare
Your skincare routine might be solid all year long. But summer has a way of changing the rules without telling you.
More UV exposure, more heat, more sweat, more time outdoors. Your skin is working harder from Memorial Day through Labor Day than it does any other time of year. And the choices you make this season, what you put on, how often you reapply, and what you reach for when things go sideways, determine what your skin looks like come fall.
This isn't about fear. It's about going into summer informed so you can actually enjoy it, skin and all.
THE CONVERSATION WE NEED TO HAVE: SPF
Let's start with the one thing that matters more than anything else this season: sun protection.
SPF isn't just for beach days. It's for the walk to the subway, the lunch outside, the hour on the rooftop you didn't plan for. UVA rays, the ones responsible for aging and pigmentation, penetrate glass and cloud cover. They're present even when the sun doesn't feel strong.
Summer is peak pigmentation season. If you're dealing with melasma, sun spots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne, consistent SPF application is the single most important thing you can do to prevent it from getting worse. More than any serum, more than any treatment.
PHYSICAL VS. CHEMICAL SPF: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Physical sunscreens, also called mineral sunscreens, use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and deflect UV rays. They tend to be better tolerated by sensitive, reactive, and acne-prone skin because they don't absorb into the skin. Newer mineral formulations have significantly improved on the white cast issue that used to make them harder to wear daily.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They tend to be more lightweight and invisible on the skin, which makes them easier to incorporate into a daily routine. However some chemical filters can be irritating for sensitive skin or those with hormonal concerns.
Ingredients to be cautious of: Oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and octocrylene are common chemical filters that have raised questions around skin irritation and hormone disruption. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, look for formulas that avoid these.
How often to reapply: Every two hours when you're outdoors. Every time you sweat heavily or get in water. No SPF, regardless of the number, lasts all day without reapplication.

WHEN SUMMER WINS AND YOUR SKIN PAYS FOR IT
Even with the best intentions, sometimes you get too much sun. A longer beach day than planned, forgetting to reapply, falling asleep outside. It happens.
Here's how to handle it:
Immediately after sun exposure: Cool the skin down gently. A cool shower or compress works well. Avoid anything active, no acids, no retinol, no exfoliation. Your barrier is compromised and needs to recover, not be challenged. Keep your routine simple and focused on calming and repairing.
What to reach for: Look for ingredients that reduce inflammation, support barrier repair, and encourage the skin's natural healing process. Here's what we recommend from our shelves:
Beauty Shamans Mermaid Face A soothing, antioxidant-rich mist formulated with seawater, white tea, and plankton extract. It cools on contact, reduces redness, and helps accelerate the skin's natural repair process after UV damage. Keep it in the fridge for extra relief on a hot day.
Face Reality Barrier Care Gel Cream An acne-safe moisturizer designed to repair and strengthen the skin barrier without clogging pores. Formulated with ceramides, squalane, phytosterols, and essential fatty acids, it deeply hydrates while supporting barrier recovery. Particularly helpful for skin that's feeling dry, tight, or reactive after sun exposure, and an excellent companion for anyone using active acne treatments that can increase sun sensitivity.
True Botanicals Chebula Active Serum Powered by Chebula, a cascading antioxidant rooted in Ayurvedic medicine, this serum corrects uneven skin tone, reduces fine lines, and aggressively repairs the moisture barrier while fighting environmental damage. A go-to for skin that's been through a lot and needs serious restoration.
Shayde Beauty The Overnight Glow Up Mask For the days after sun exposure when you're ready to start addressing the damage. This overnight mask targets hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone through a targeted blend of Kojic Acid, Niacinamide, and Azelaic Acid. Kojic Acid lightens visible sun damage and age spots, Niacinamide supports barrier function and evens tone, and Azelaic Acid gently exfoliates to fade discoloration while calming inflammation. Use it once your skin has had a day or two to recover from the initial stress before introducing any active ingredients.
A FEW MORE THINGS WORTH KNOWING THIS SEASON
Your routine may need to get lighter. Heavy creams and oils that felt great in winter can feel occlusive in summer heat, leading to congestion and breakouts. If your skin starts feeling overwhelmed, consider a lighter moisturizer until the season shifts.
Sweat can clog pores. If you're more active in summer, cleansing after workouts matters more than almost anything else. A gentle cleanser used consistently does more for your skin than any active ingredient when your barrier is already under stress.
Heat and humidity can trick your skin into feeling hydrated when it isn't. Drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when it's hot.
And if summer is historically when your skin acts up, that's useful information. Bring it to your next appointment. We can adjust your treatment plan and home routine so your skin isn't just surviving the season.
If you want to go into the season with a clear plan, a customized treatment, and products chosen specifically for your skin, that's exactly what we're here for. Book your next appointment and let's make sure your skin is ready for whatever this summer brings.
